My dear Parkinson,

As you are presumably aware a copy of a message

from the Bishop of Hong Kong to the Archbishop of Canterbury

was forwarded to His Grace from the Colonial Office on June 4th.

That message relates to the question of demilitarising

the area in Kuangtung for the purpose of providing shelter for

refugee women, children and infirm men only.

In view of the dreadful bombing which is taking

place in Canton and neighbourhood, the Archbishop heartily

approves of this suggestion and hopes that the Secretary of

State for the Colonies will take steps to press upon the

Foreign Office the desirability of taking action in this

direction as a step towards the provision of some place of

comparative safety for innocent noncombatants.
